Bollocks.
I have an appointment tomorrow to have this dammed tooth pulled under general anaesthetic, but I have developed a snuffle and a sore throat.
It looks like I'm back on the waiting list again. At least, I was going to get put on the waiting list for the lovely private place that did my nuts last year (but still on NHS money, as per my nuts) so I might end up back on there.
I'm getting fed up now, it's been a problem since mid June.
Also - those of you who've had wisdom teeth pulled, what can I expect? It's lower jaw and the tooth's in sideways on, and has a big hole in it. So big it's gone into the next tooth, but they don't need to pull that one apparently. I've never had a general before, lots of local but no general. I'll be in as a day case.
Ta.
ALSO: I need an address for The Circus, Exeter - I have mail for Mr Bunny.

Wisdom teeth
Date: 2007-10-29 07:35 am (UTC)I had all four out when I was 16, as they had all four erupted (come out through the gum) and while they weren't a problem then it looked like they could be in the future so out they came. My brother got his done about the same time, but his hadn't erupted all the way yet. They knocked me out with gas (can't remember what kind) that worked quick (I got to 8 on counting down from 10). Apperently I took a bit longer than expected to wake back up and they were starting to get worried.
My entire lower face was numb, from nose to chin. Not in the "I can't control my jaw" way, but rather in a "I'm touching my nose, but I'm only getting sensory input from my finger and it's a bit odd" way. After a short nap back at home I was fine. No swelling, and back on soup by that evening, and regular food the next day.
My brother swelled up like a little chipmunk and he was several days on yogourt/juice/thin soup.
Rinsing with saltwater tastes awful, but really does help more than anything to keep the area clean while you'r healing.

Date: 2007-10-29 08:03 am (UTC)I seem to remember that you do wake up feeling particularly groggy - so a friend to get you home may be a good plan. I had no swelling and, apart from spending all day sticking my tongue in the spongy gap where a tooth used to be I was all fine pretty damned fast.
I definitely second the salt-rinse thing. It does taste absolutely grim, but nothing works quite like it for getting swelling down in your gums. I've never used it for removed teeth, but it's been a god-send as my own wisdom teeth have given me jip coming through.

Date: 2007-10-29 10:33 am (UTC)Afterwards, you can expect an aching jaw for a couple of days (from being held wide open for most of an hour) which isn't too bad - a bit like a pulled muscle and it'll fade in a couple of days. Your cheeks will probably swell a bit, although mine were quite disappointing - I was expecting to look like a hamster and didn't. You'll also have stitched pits in your gums, which will mean bits of food get caught in them and it's hugely important to mouthwash with salt solution after every meal to prevent bits of food sitting in there and decaying. This is the unpleasant bit, but it's bearable.
I was pretty unhappy for the rest of the day after I'd had them out - once the local wore off it was bloody painful. My method for successfully dealing with this is a cocktail of Ibuprofen (for the inflammation) and Co-Codemol (for the pain), sitting in bed with a beautiful woman and watching a lot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer on DVD.

Date: 2007-10-29 11:49 am (UTC)General was fine, although I woke up quicker than they were expecting, and still needed a bit more cleaning up. I won't say it wasn't a bit sore for the first 48 hours, but I wasn't too bad after that. I got done in the local private hospital under NHS money, too, so I arranged pain relief with my GP in advance (bottle of Dihydrocodeine FTW!)
I had 12 stitches in the one with the jaw problem, but the other one was pretty much back to normal in a week. I took a week off work, but I was working from home after 2-3 days, as I felt fine and was bored.
To be honest, I was freaking out over the general, and it was fine. Because local anaestetic and most regular analgesics don't have much of an effect on me, I was worried about the anaestetic not working, but they laid me down on a trolley, I had a laugh and a joke to cover the nerves with the nurse and anaestetist whilst they wired me up up with the heart monitor, they put a cannula in the back of my hand, and then injected the stuff. My arm went cold, and the next thing I knew, I was waking up afterwards. I'll be honest that I was disoriented and freaked out a bit for around 10 seconds, and then it was all good.
I did look like a hamster on the side with the jaw bit done, and there was a bit of bruising, but I can honestly say that I would have no problem booking myself in to have it done again. The other thing is to agree with thewhitespider - oral hygiene afterwards is hugely important. I hate salt mouthwashes, so I got myself some Betadine over the counter from Boots - it's about £2.50, and it's an iodine mouthwash. Tastes fine, it's brilliant for killing bugs, and the only problem with it is it turns your tongue orangey-black temporarily, which is a small price to pay for no dry-socket infection!
You'll be fine!

Date: 2007-10-29 07:24 pm (UTC)Jon made me loads of Angel Delight, it was lovely, but after a few days I was really sick of it! Mashed potato was another food that I found okay to eat - soup was good but I found I missed solid food.
